Snow Cream


It’s winter folks.  And it’s been a very cold and snowy winter here in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.  So snowy that I’m seeing more and more recipes posted for snow cream.  Snow cream is actually ice cream made with fresh snow.  I have not tried it because even though I live out in the country, I live in an apartment complex that has too much foot and automobile traffic to safely collect fresh snow.  I suppose I could grab some as soon as the snow falls but it’s too much of a hassle for me.  Besides, there’s so much old snow and leftover brine and salt on the surfaces, I just don’t want to take a chance.

However, for those who might live way out in the country, sparsely populated, give this a try as I hear it is very good.

Makes 4 servings

1 cup half and half or milk
1/3 to 1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to your taste)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 to 6 cups clean, freshly fallen snow

  1. In a large bowl combine half and half, vanilla extract and sugar. Stir until sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes.
  2. Stir in snow, a cup at a time, until the ice cream magically forms! Freeze for several minutes if desired before serving.

You could add sprinkles, jimmies and other toppings.
